THE 16 LESSONS • LESSON 4

Cookies Are a Food Group

Early grief is hard enough without denying yourself the little things that bring you comfort. I learned to give myself permission to sleep when I needed to sleep, eat what I wanted to eat, and grab whatever small bits of pleasure I could find.

If cookies for breakfast made me feel a little better, I ate cookies. If dinner was a hamburger or another peanut butter sandwich, that was fine too.

This wasn't the time to worry about what I should be doing. I was learning to give myself whatever comfort I could find.
